These are the different parties involved in the E-TIC system and how they contribute and/or benefit from the system.

  • What exactly is their involvement?
  • What is their vested interest? That is, what is their motivation to be involved, why do they want to see the project succeed?

Academia

Involvement During Project Implementation

  • Consulting about work practices and how they would like to be involved
  • Data collection, data treatment, collaboration with different university networks

Ongoing Involvement

  • Interest in academic article(s) about practices around the E-TIC project in particular, and food security, agricultural practices and their consequences, approaches strengthening the position of farmers, headers and fishermen, community radio practices -- linking local radio broadcasting with new technologies and SMS information delivery, etc.

Community Radio Journalists

Involvement During Project Implementation

  • Consulting about work practices
  • Training for community radio journalists in order for them to be able to use the information provided by the project for the programs
  • Training for community radio journalists to help them broadcast their programs on the Internet via the ETIC website

Ongoing Involvement

  • Reading price, weather, and other info on the air at regular intervals
  • Providing information through their programs about food security and agricultural practices

Farmers, Herders and Fishermen

The involvement of these three groups is practically identical, therefore they can be grouped together.

Involvement During Project Implementation

  • Data collection from them -- mapping about their needs, location, (farming) practices, demographics, etc.
  • Consulting about work practices and how they would like to be involved
  • Training to help them use the tools set up for the project

Ongoing Involvement

  • Sending in price info via SMS at regular intervals
  • Listening to community radio
  • Consulting the cybercafés (if available) for information, providing collectors and researchers with information

Written Press Journalists

Involvement During Project Implementation

  • Consulting about work practices and how they would like to be involved

Ongoing Involvement

  • Writing articles about the E-TIC project for publication elsewhere, at irregular intervals?
  • Writing "best practices" reference material (not articles), at regular intervals?

Mobile Phone Operator (Per Country)

Each country where E-TIC is present requires some sort of support from a mobile phone operator. This has to be organized per country so that people sending SMSs don't have the added expense of sending them internationally.

Involvement During Project Implementation

  • Information, documentation, planning, implementation

Ongoing Involvement

  • Operator collaboration is required for the lifetime of the project
